During this unit I was taught how to write a memoir. My teacher asked the class to read the memoir The Glass Castle in order to see an example of exceptional memoir writing. I enjoyed reading The glass castle and I referenced it while writing my own memoir.
The memoir showed how less is more when writing a memoir. When the author underplayed certain events it made it more significant and shocking. Also, showing rather than telling was used a lot in the novel. All these techniques were very useful and made my experience when writing my memoir much easier.
The Glass Castle was a memoir about the life of a young girl living in poverty throughout her life. it showed her as a young girl traveling constantly with her siblings and parents. As she grew older she started to see the flaws of her parents and became tired of living in poverty. By underplaying shocking events it made the scenes more significant. Also, by her showing what was happening instead of stating it gave the reader the chance to come to a conclusion them self. I had never seen this type of writing before so it was very interesting.
I found writing my memoir challenging but also easy. The easy part was getting the story out, the more difficult part was keeping the writing present tense and showing information instead of telling it. I enjoyed writing my memoir because it was a significant part in my life and I am glad I got to share it with other people.
For me, writing is a stress reliever. I love to read and write so I was excited to attempt this new style of writing. Writing my memoir was very calming and fun. The techniques taught to me helped me have a different perspective on how to portray information to the reader. I never considered showing information instead of out right telling it to the reader. It helped make my writing more interesting and impactful. I am excited to see what I will learn next.
